Markets end higher amid volatility, Nifty at 4340.

Market Summary

Sensex gained 151.63 points (+1.05%) to settle at 14,645.47. Nifty surged 49.80 points (+1.16%) to settle at 4340.90.

 

Markets ended higher after an extremely volatile session. Huge buying interest was seen in education, sugar, brokerage and oil marketing stocks. On the sectoral front telecom, realty, banking, power, technology and select metal stocks helped markets to move up.

 

Market breadth was negative bias; about 1329 shares advanced, 1418 shares declined and nearly 409 shares remained unchanged.

 

Midcap Index went up 51.17 points (+1.01%) to settle at 5,127.51.

 

Smallcap Index gained 17.38 points (+0.3) to close at 5,757.42.

 

Total trading turnover stood at Rs 78,011.98 crore. This included Rs 16,643.64 from the NSE cash segment, Rs 55,613.06 crore from the NSE F&O and rest Rs 5,755.28 crore from BSE cash segment.

 

Global cues 

Asian markets ended higher. Shanghai, Jakarta Composite, Kospi and Taiwan Weighted gained 1.5-2.3%. Straits Times was up 0.8% while Nikkei fell 0.2%.

 

European markets were trading firm by the time Indian equities closed for trading. FTSE was trading up 60.54 points (+1.42%) at 4,309.75; CAC was up 58.05 points (+1.85%) at 3,198.49 and DAX was up 73.14 points (+1.52%) at 4,881.78. Among the US futures, Dow futures rose 44 points to 8,438 and Nasdaq futures went up 12.25 points, to 1,488.5.

 

Trading Summary

Realty index shot up 4.25% to close at 3,343.51. Indiabulls Real, DLF and Unitech were up 3.9-7%. Anant Raj Industries, Sobha Developer and HDIL gained 1.6-3%.

 

Bankex rose 1.33% to end at 8,321.05. Axis Bank, SBI, Union Bank, Bank of Baroda and ICICI Bank gained 1-4.3%; PNB and HDFC rose 0.7% each.

 

Auto index geared up 1.26% to close at 4,615.76. Apollo Tyres, M&M, Ashok Leyland, Tata Motors and Bajaj Auto were up 1.6-4%. Maruti Suzuki was up 0.44%.

 

Oil & gas index gained 1.12% to end at 9,495.07. BPCL, HPCL, IOC, Reliance Industries, Reliance Petroleum and Cairn India gained 1-5.5% while ONGC lost 1.36%.

 

Power index charged up 0.95% to finish at 2,869.29. Neyveli Lignite, Torrent Power, Reliance Infrastructure, Suzlon Energy, Reliance Power, Lanco Infratech and GVK Power were up 1-7%.

 

IT index gained 0.92% to settle at 3,317.35. HCL Tech, Tech Mahindra and Infosys moved up 1-2.2%. TCS and Wipro were up 0.7% and 0.2%, respectively.

 

FMCG index rose up 0.87% to settle at 2,282.44. United Breweries, Colgate, HUL, Tata Tea, Marico and ITC went up 0.5-2.8%.

 

Metals index went up by 0.53% to shut shop at 10,888.70. SAIL, Sesa Goa, Tata Steel, JSW Steel, Jindal Steel and Sterlite Industries increased 0.6-1.6% while Hindalco, Hindustan Zinc and Nalco fell 1-3.5%.

 

Among telecom stocks, MTNL, Idea Cellular, Tata Teleservices, Reliance Communication, Tata Communication and Bharti Airtel went up 2.6-4.6%.

 

In the sugar space, Bajaj Hindusthan, Balrampur Chini, Dhampur Sugar, Dharani Sugars, Dwarikesh Sugar, Sakthi Sugars, Shree Renuka Sugars, Thiru Arooran and Triveni Engineering jumped 1-7%.

 

Among education stocks Educomp Solutions, Everonn Systems, Aptech and NIIT surged 10-14.6%.

 

Among brokerage stocks India Infoline, Khandwala Securities, Motilal Oswal, Apollo Sindhoori and Consol Finvest gained 4-9%.
